Adjustment is as Easy as 1..2..Poke!

Published by under Medical

Many patients have chosen the lap band system because of the fact that the band can be adjusted to each individual’s needs. Compared to other weight loss surgeries, gastric banding surgery requires no stapling or cutting of the stomach. Since every patient’s eating habits and body systems are unique, this gastric band is perfect because it can adjusted.

lap band

Lap band adjustments are done by a lap band surgeon. The surgeon will locate the port by feeling on the patient’s abdomen. Once the port is located, the doctor may choose to do a simple adjustment, or do an adjustment by placing the patient in front of an X-ray machine and watching how liquid flows right after the adjustment. The doctor will inject or remove saline from the lap band port in order to inflate or deflate band and adjust it to patients needs.

Do you know how many Calories in a Banana?

Published by under Health

Obesity is the number one growing epidemic in the United States.  Fast food restaurants have become a staple in the American diet and unhealthy lifestyles are taking over.  The question that American’s have to ask themselves is: why is this happening?  The answer, to some, is quite obvious, lack of knowledge and lack of understanding nutrition.

Calories are the.  Everything has calories.  There are calories in a banana.  No matter how healthy or unhealthy the food it contains calories.  A calorie is a measure of energy.  The body naturally burns off so many calories a day. That number is determined by a person’s lifestyle.  An active person who exercises every day is going to burn more calories than a person who sits on their couch watching TV every day.

Your lifestyle should tell you how many calories a day you can eat without gaining weight.  A good rule of thumb is to take your weight, multiply it by 10, and that is the number of calories you should be eating to maintain your current weight.  If you weigh 180 pounds, and are looking to lower your weight, you should eat fewer calories than prescribed.  Perhaps start a 1500 calorie diet. If you are the type of person who would rather workout than eat less, or healthier, than you have to create a calorie deficiency in your exercise habits.  So, if you weighed 180 pounds, you can still eat 1800 calories a day, but you should be burning 300 calories a day in exercise to lose weight.

A Weak Labor Pool to Meet Significant Demand for In-Home Health Care

Published by under Medical

Locally, it isn’t just primary care doctors in Rockville that are in demand — the market for home health care is witnessing a marked boom. Many factors are contributing to the uptick in demand for home health care; the most talked about among these are relatively recent federal laws aimed at capping rates of patient readmissions at hospitals, bolstered government support for in-home health care, and a public that’s gradually drifting away from nursing homes.

However, a person’s having settled on engaging an in-home caregiver for health care needs does not imply that that same person will not also be on the lookout for a quality family practitioner in Gaithersburg, or any other surrounding town. Quite the contrary, in-home health care tends to work in conjunction with regular doctor visits. Experts in the field of home health care predict that current patient demand will only increase in the future as the country’s population ages and life expectancy increases.

Beyond the present debates concerning the most effective arrangements for a genuinely functioning hospital practice, people paying attention to health care matters are also rather breathlessly relating to anyone within earshot of another problem: finding the qualified labor pool that will meet the in-home health care demand increases.

As the source of their concerns, these folks are pointing to an insufficient availability, and general support, for proper job training for individuals willing to fill up these positions. Moreover, the pay for those on track to carry forth in this career is not the most generous: a 2009 review showed that their median hourly pay rate was $10.58 — in contrast, the hourly pay rate median of all American workers is $15.95. Only to make matters worse, once in-home caregivers surmount the typical hiring hurdles, they can expect to find poor working conditions, which more often than not result in high turnover rates — something that is never good for the person receiving the care.

Paying the Price for Obesity

Published by under Medical

Obesity comes at a price. Thousands of Americans each year pay that price with diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, arthritis and high blood pressure. All these diseases can become deadly if not taken care of in a timely manner. Unfortunately the easiest solution to all of these problems is the hardest for some people achieve: weight loss.

One of the most common conditions that obese patients face is type 2 diabetes. A type 2 diabetes cure may be achieved through the use of the lapband. The Mayo clinic outlines the benefits off weight-loss surgery for those with diabetes:
“If you have type 2 diabetes and your body mass index (BMI) is greater than 35, you may be a candidate for weight-loss surgery (bariatric surgery). Blood sugar levels return to normal in 55 to 95 percent of people with diabetes, depending on the procedure performed. Surgeries that bypass a portion of the small intestine have more of an effect on blood sugar levels than do other weight- loss surgeries” ¹

According to WebMD.com, laparoscopic gastric banding is the second most common weight loss surgery, after gastric bypass. Gastric banding uses laparoscopic tools to place an adjustable silicon band around the upper part of the stomach. This band created a small upper pouch with about an inch-wide outlet, which can only hold about an ounce of food. A plastic tube runs from the silicone band to a port just under the skin. Saline can be injected or removed through this port through the use of a small needle. Injecting saline fills the band and makes it tighter and removing saline makes the band looser. In this way, the band can be tightened or loosened as needed. This can reduce side effects and improve healthy, gradual weight loss.

The lap band is often considered to be least invasive weight loss surgery, boasting a more impressive safety record than other surgeries because of its reversible nature. Lap band surgery also has a low complication rate because of this, which means high levels of vitamin absorption and a low instance of revision surgery.

Choosing Your Doctor: Ask Friends, Look Online, and Visit the Office

Published by under Medical

How are you going about your search for a family practitioner in Rockville? Ideally, you’ll want to seek a quality practice that is near your home, though most people expect to travel a little across town when they’re going to see their doctors. Today, most people start their search for health care by going online. They scope out what practices are in the general neighborhood, peek at any feedback they’ve received online, and delve further into the specialties of the individual doctors that are part of it.

But most commonly, someone looking for a family practitioner in Gaithersburg will ask everyone they know about what doctor they’re seeing and how they feel about him or her. Even if the persons asked are not local, what they say about their doctors is still valuable because it will provide information on the many ways that a doctor can be evaluated, from the perspective of a patient.

Of course the most meaningful conversations, when choosing your internal medicine doctor in Rockville, will be those held with friends who live near you, since they will provide insight into the local doctors. Once you’ve narrowed your list of possible practices through these important dialogues, don’t forget to visit the actual doctor offices before finally making your decision.

Decline of Sexual Health after Prostatectomy

Published by under Health

Prostate cancer is a cancer that develops in the prostate, a gland found in the male reproductive system. It is the part which makes and stores seminal fluid. It is found in the pelvis under the urinary bladder and just in front of the rectum. Due to its placement, prostate diseases often affect urination, ejaculation and even defecation. It has yet been discovered what exactly causes prostate cancer, studies are still being done.

female-decline

Prostate Cancer is one of the leading cancers in men. Recently in a study, it shows that men who drink coffee, decaf or caffeinated, regularly are less likely to develop a deadly form of prostate cancer. Although it is possible to survive the cancer through a procedure called prostatectomy, it comes with a few downsides. The lack of sexual function is one problem most people who have gone through the surgery complained that they become uninterested when it comes to sex and even though the urge is there, they are left unable to do so and worst of all, there is a significant increase in incontinence.

Although doctors clearly inform their patients of the risks and side effects cause by the prostatectomy, studies show that men have unrealistic expectations after the surgery regarding sex and urinary function. Most men feel that their sex life will be better after the surgery and that their urinary function will be much better, although it is possible, it all depends on how a person recuperates, it still is a pretty high expectation.

Obesity is Not Letting You Have a Baby

Published by under Medical

Who knew that obesity would affect our chances of conceiving a child? As a human being it is natural to want to procreate and become a family with a person by your side, but nobody saw it coming about obesity is leading to infertility.

There have been several studies to prove that obesity has a big impact on becoming fertile. “Studies have highlighted the link between obesity, infertility and adverse reproductive health outcome.” There’s also a study done to women to connect infertility with obesity, like the study done by researcher Jan Willem van der Steeg, MD, of Amsterdam’s Academic Medical Center.

Obesity

One of the infertility solutions is the lap band. The lap band surgery has been approved by the FDA , the lap band system has helped the patient to eat less food and feel fuller for longer time. This method has helped thousands of patients to reach their goal weight and become healthier and change their life style. John Dixon, MD, head of the Obesity Research Unit, Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, states, “…there’s an important consideration for women who have had troubling conceiving due to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a condition linked to obesity. Some women with PCOS can quickly become fertile when they lose weight, even if they were infertile before surgery, and need to be aware that they may become pregnant.”

The lap band procedure is quick and effective. This procedure is more effective than any other procedure since it offers fewer risks and faster recovery. In most cases it is done laparoscopy, using general anesthesia. It takes no more than 60 minutes for the procedure to be completed. The lap band cost can run from $14,000-$16,000, depends on patient medical history. There are payment options from insurance, financing and payment plans.

If you or a family member would like more information about the lap band system, please visit www.lovelapband.com and take advantage of the free insurance verification on the site. Or feel free to call (877) 919-9997, and they will be more than happy to help you achieve your weight loss goal.

Medical Breakthrough: Artificial Kidneys

Published by under Medical

Article by Bill Kevorkian of Health and Fitness Centre

The heart, the liver, the kidneys and the pancreas are the most important organs in a human’s body. Damage one of these and you are on your way to a lot of discomfort and a lot of pain, worst case scenario is you die. Healthy living is what will ensure that these vital organs stay in tip top shape, however, with today’s society, healthy living is practically taboo. This is why medical doctors have found ways to prolong the lives of people who don’t take care of their body well enough. For the heart, you can have a by-pass surgery to remove the clots caused by cholesterol in the heart. A heart transplant is another way to save a human’s life when their heart has completely given out. A liver transplant can help people with liver problems. Kidney transplants can help people with kidney problems. There is still no substitute for the pancreas and a pancreas transplant is still unheard of, so if you damage your pancreas, you are as good as dead.

Recently in medical study, doctors have explored the possibility of using artificial kidneys to help people who have chronic kidney diseases. As you know, the kidneys are responsible for cleansing the blood in the body. If the kidneys fail, the liver will too and then eventually the heart will too. However, there are fewer kidneys available for use for transplants, so doctors thought about artificial kidneys instead. The artificial kidney mimics the real one. Tests are still being done and engineers are still trying to mimic the real kidney, so until an artificial kidney is complete, people who suffer from chronic kidney failure will just have to wait.

Lap Band Requirements

Published by under Medical

Lap band Aetna insurance sometimes requires patients to undergo a nutritional evaluation which involves a supervised three month diet in order to determine their coverage. When considering the surgery, it is important to know the lap band risks and feel 100% comfortable with your bariatric surgeon. Once you have all of the facts, you can choose the option that is right for you.

Ways to Drink More Water

Published by under Health

We all know that water can do wonders for the body. We also know that we should be drinking at least eight glasses a day. The only problem with this is that it isn’t that easy to actually do it. If you’re one f those people who needs to drink more water, here are some things that can help you get those eight glasses a day.

  1. Don’t Just Drink When you’re Thirsty- most people drink to quench their thirst. The truth is that you should be drinking water even if you don’t feel thirsty. The next time that you don’t have anything to do why not drink a glass of water?
  2. woman-drinking-water

  3. Don’t Drink Everything at Once- for many, drinking water becomes hard because they try to get all they need in one sitting. Doing this can leave you bloated. Instead of drinking the required amount all at once, break down your intake. Try taking in a glass every few hours.
  4. Make it Easy- sometimes the reason we don’t drink water is because it isn’t available. We pick a can of soda or a cup of coffee because that’s what we see. Have a bottle of water around you all the time. This way when you need a drink you won’t have an excuse not to pick water.
  5. Challenge Yourself- sometimes all we need is a bit of motivation. Challenge yourself to rink more water and reward yourself if you are able to do it. For example, don’t allow yourself to take in any other liquids until you’ve had at least half the amount of water you should be drinking.
